Derek McCammon - The Hope of the Church of the One Body - Part 1

Derek starts by reviewing all the groups that have been addressed for instruction in the church that Timothy is leading in Ephesus. He addressed Widows, Elders, Servants, and then he spoke to those who don’t understand the truth. There are men who think that gain is godliness and he spends most of chapter 6 addressing this group. He explains that these men are usually proud and argumentative. The lesson today picks up in verse 13 which includes some dispensational teaching within this pastoral letter. In part 14 of this series we looked at the testimony that was given to Pilate who is recalled in verse 13. We see Paul tell Timothy in 1 Tim 6:14 “That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:” What is Timothy supposed to keep? 1 Tim 6:11-12 “But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.” How long is he supposed to keep these? Until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. This word “appearing” is in the Greek ”epiphaneia” which means a shining forth upon (english: epiphany) and is associated with our calling in the Mystery. Many believe that the text “his appearing” involves the second advent. This is not so because the word that speaks of that event is “parousia”.  “Parousia” is always used in relation to the kingdom teaching which involves the promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel) and involves His bodily presence here on Earth.  The word “Parousia” is used 24 times in scripture, 17 times it speaks of the Lord and His coming, the other 7 times speaks of Paul and his being there. An example of using of the word “Parousia” is in Matthew 24:3 “And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” The rest of Matthew 24 deals with answering these questions which is Kingdom teaching pertaining to Israel. This ties in with 1 Thessalonians 4:13 where they are discussing their hope of a resurrection (your calling always determines your hope and the hope always determines the inheritance). In 4:15 you will see Parousia when it says “the coming of the Lord”. In Revelation 19:7-16 you will see a description of the Parousia of the Lord.  Now, back in 1 Timothy 6:14, we have the word “Epiphaneia” which is associated with our calling apart from Israel’s. In Colossians 3:1-4 we see that we get to be a part of Christ’s Epiphany in glory (not on this earth). We see in Titus 2:13 that epiphany is our hope “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”   Click here to listen now. You may want to review all of the audio lessons in the Timothy Study.

TimothyStudy_P16Timothy Study - Part 16. The lesson on July 8, 2007 continues with the study in Timothy. Most of 1 Timothy is a pastoral letter because it deals with “how to” but in chapter 6 we’ve come to a dispensational part of the book. In 1 Timothy 6:13-21 we find two Amens. The first Amen comes after the charge Paul gives Timothy in verses 13-16. The second Amen comes in verses 17-21. When dealing with domestic issues, we always handle them through what God has given to us dispensationally, because the fruit comes from the root. In verse 14 of chapter 6, Timothy is charged “That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:” That word appearing is “Epiphany” is different from “Parousia” The Parousia and The Epiphany which is an important distinction to make because “Epiphany” pertains to our calling which dictates our walk.  “Parousia” belongs it Israel and the calling in Abraham. In Ephesians 1:17 Paul prays “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:” We learn from this that wisdom and the knowledge of Christ is there, we just need available to receive it. God gives us an opportunity to acknowledge this wisdom by revelation of what God has in store for us. In Ephesians 1:18 we see more about this wisdom “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,” The first thing listed is hope. Most of Christendom today has as their hope the rapture, the tribulation, and the millennial period. That is not our hope of the church of the one body. Our hope is defined in the fellowship of the Mystery in this dispensation of grace. Paul talks about this in Ephesians 3:1-9. Hope is based on our calling and our calling is based on our inheritance. This all relates to the three spheres of blessings. In Deuteronomy 10:14 we see the three spheres mentioned “Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD's thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.” The three spheres belong to three different groups. The calling in the Mystery has its inheritance in the heavenlies.   Find out more by listening to the lesson here.

When Man Does Right in His Own Eyes.  The lesson on July 15, 2007 was given by Leland Maples of the LOOPS Organization (Loved Ones Of Prisoners). What happens when men decide to do right? There are plenty of scriptures that talks about men doing what’s right, in their own eyes. In the history of Israel, you go from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob into Egypt. Moses was selected to bring Israel out of Egypt and Joshua took them into the promised land. After Joshua died, you come to the time of the judges. The judges of Israel were good men wanting to do what is right (in fact, four were listed in the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11). When good men start doing what’s right in their own eyes, you will find that in two generations, this is when bad people start to take over. Proverbs 14:12; 16:25 say “16 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. 25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Do you know who implemented capital punishment? The answer is God (see Genesis 9:6) It’s been man who has tried to try something else because he’s thinking in his own eyes. God has established what is right, we just need to follow it. One example of this was with Saul, who didn’t follow the commandment of the Lord because he thought in his own mind that the spoils of the conquered enemy was fine to sacrifice unto God (1 Samuel 15:12-26) This is where Samuel told Saul that it is better to obey, than to sacrifice and rebellion is the same as witchcraft. Mans right is usually wrong! The number one problem in today’s modern church is that man is improving it. The same is true in society with issues like Capital Punishment, Abortion, Evolution vs. Creation, Tattooing, Homosexuality, Prayer in school, etc. Somewhere man thought in his own eyes that these issues should be handled differently than what God has established in scripture. Man’s biggest mistake about being right was the thought that good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell. Surely, it wouldn’t be right if the opposite were true? But with God, it is! God said that everyone is a sinner and no one is righteous. Does this mean that we should all go to hell? No, because God provided a program that if a man chooses to accept Christ Jesus, he can be forgiven of his sin and go to heaven.   Click here to listen now.

Timothy Study - Part 17 (final in the series). The lesson on July 22, 2007 finishes the audio series in Timothy. This is the 17th and final lesson in this series. The last lesson looked at our hope and our sphere of blessing. It covered the three spheres of blessings and which ones belong to whom which will probably lead to another series that dives into what our hope is in the church of the one body. But, in finishing Timothy, the verses covered were in 1 Tim 6:15-16 “Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” These verses express very particular truths we have in the calling that we have. Christ Jesus is the only potentate. There is none other who has accomplished what Christ Jesus has done. He is the only on that has immortality! The God Man, Christ Jesus is the only one that can dwell in the light of God. Now, in verse 17 thru the end of the chapter, Paul picks up the message from where he left off in verse 9. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.” There are 9 million millionaires in America today. What is rich? Isn’t it relative? Riches are something that we never should covet. The first thing God tells those who are rich is not to be highminded. People who have money think they are better than those who don’t. Don’t trust in your uncertain riches.  The lesson goes into examples in scripture of how riches are a snare to a man of God.   Click here to listen now. You may also want to review all of the audio lessons in the Timothy Series.

The Hope of the Church of the One Body - Part 1. The lesson on July 29, 2007 begins a new series that studies our hope in the church today. This series ask the question what is your hope based on? Everyone has hope but what do you place your hope in? We studied several weeks ago the three spheres of blessings and iIn that study we learned that hope is the confident expectation of a promise that is to be enjoyed or fulfilled. Worldly hope compared to a spiritual hope has no confidence that a future expectation will happen. For instance, you may ask somebody that has had a calamity if they will be okay... and the answer may be “I hope so”. This shows the difference between spiritual hope where you have confidence in what has been promised to you because God has said so. Every endeavor that God starts, He will complete it. As Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:9-10 “Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:”  In the book of Job, which is probably the oldest book in the Bible, we see Job has hope being redeemed which includes a resurrection (Job 14:13-14 “O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.” and in Job 19:25-26 “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:”) The hardest question we have is when will God fulfill the hope that we have?   Click here to listen now.
