Should Halloween be Hallowed?

Each year on October 31st, the doorbell rings with a familiar shout of ‘Trick or Treat’.   Is this harmless fun or does it open the door to something else?

Should Halloween be Hallowed?  Here is a lesson from the audio archives that discusses the tradition of Halloween. Should Halloween be Hallowed?

A Halloween Story.  This time of year, it has become a popular tradition to celebrate Halloween with the promotion of all things “scarry”.  On the surface, most folks like to dress up children and have them go door to door and receive either “tricks” or “treats”.  Yet, the truth behind the halloween holiday is the promotion of evil that is against God.  To the christian, there is nothing more scarry than being apart from God.  Ephesians  2:11-12 (KJV) reminds us “Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world.” At one time, gentiles were without hope and without God in the world.  This is a very scarry position.  Yet God provided a way for gentiles to be saved.  As Ephesians 2:13 (KJV) declares “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ”  Today, Christ has provided the only way to be reconciled to God, yet there are those who have yet to accept the best “treat” of all: eternal life in Christ... Now that’s scarry.     Click here to listen to the lesson on 10-27-02.

What does the Bible say about the ‘evil’ that is part of Halloween?

Selected Old Testament Scriptures

Exodus 22:18  (KJV) (context – part of the law given to Israel in Exodus 20:1-24:8)
8 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

Halloween Alteratives

Many churches now offer alternatives for families who choose to avoid the traditional Halloween celebration.  Some choose to hand out Bible Tracts like these from the American Tract Society.

Lev 20:26-27  (KJV)
6 And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.  27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.

Deuteronomy 18:9-14 (KJV)
9  When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.  10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,  11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with

familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.  12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.  13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.  14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.

1 Sam 15:22-24 (KJV)
22  And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.  23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.  24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

Selected New Testament Scriptures

Gal 5:19-25  (KJV)
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication,

Harmless?

Can the tollerance of evil for the sake of  halloween fun be harmless”?

Scripture is pretty clear on how God feels about witches, wizards, familiar spirits, and the like which are all celebrated as part of today’s harmless Halloween “fun”.

uncleanness, lasciviousness,  20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,  21 Envyings, murders, .drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.  22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,  23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.  24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.  25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

2 Timothy 3:1-17 (KJV)
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.  2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,  3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,  4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;  5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.  6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,  7 Ever learning , and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.  8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.  9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was. 10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,  11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.  12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.  13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
