Independence Day

Independence DayIndependence Day. The lesson on July 2, 2006 celebrates Independence Day in America which is the 230th anniversary of this country declaring independence from the British crown. The Declaration has five parts and is summarized with these last words: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”  The 56 men that signed this document did just that.  There are not men of this caliber today because people have a different mindset from today’s world.  There is a since of going so far but stops when it involves their own possessions. We are taught in Matthew 6:19-21(KJV) ”Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  The Bible was quoted more often than any other book by the founding fathers.     Click here to listen now.

July 4th is the celebration of Independence day in America honoring the  anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence declaring freedom from England.  Just as this day is set aside to celebrate America’s national freedoms, the Christian should set aside time to recognize the freedom we have in Christ Jesus.  The lesson from 07-08-2001  teaches from Acts 16:6-10.  The book of Acts is as much about the Acts of the Holy Spirit as it is the Acts of the Apostles.  What are the differences between the activity of the Holy Spirit in Acts compared to today?  This lesson discusses some of these differences and puts acts of the Holy Spirit in context.  Finally, the lesson correlates the national freedom Americans are celebrating to the spiritual freedom we have from the law and ordiances by Grace in Christ.       Click here to listen to the lesson from 07-08-2001.

“Under God”, Under Attack.  This week America will celebrate the 226th anniversary of its independence from England.  Most of the celebrations wil involve sporting events like baseball

The Pledge of Allegiance
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

where it’s required that the crowd honor America by singing the National Anthem as the Flag of the United States is raised in all its glory.  Another uniquely American tradition that involves the flag has been the Pledge of Allegience.  The history behind the Pledge involves the addition in 1954 of the words “under God” describing America’s belief in God.  Today, the words “under God” are under attack by Athiests who are suing to have any reference of God removed from the pledge, our currency, in our courts, and any other place remotely associated with government.  This movement to declare national independence from God is about as wrong as you can get.  Paul reminds us in 1 Tim 2:1-5 (KJV) that “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. America’s Founders and Nature’s God.  The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America acknowledges faith towards a supreme God who created mankind. The Declaration also acknowledges by all who signed it, the laws of God, the providence of God, and the judgment of God.   The Declaration also appeals to God as the Supreme Judge of the world for their intentions. The Declaration of Independence The Declaration of Independence. “When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitles them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.  That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.   We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in general Congress assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name and by the authority of the good people of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as free and independent States, they have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliance, establish commerce, and do all other acts and things which independent States may of right do.  And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence,  we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

Independence Day Commentary.  July 4th in America celebrates the 227th anniversary of independence.  No other country has held a single form of government for so long yet America’s christian-based republic is under attack by the spiritual decay of the American people.  The founders of America based their government on scripture and finally gave God the credit for founding the country.  Benjamin Franklin said “even the creator of the universe knows when a sparrow falls to the ground, so how is it we would form a nation without praying for guidance in leading this country.”  He was endorsing prayer in asking for guidance in governing the United States. From that day forward, when  His  inspiration was from  Acts 17:24-28 (KJV) “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.”  Man and government have throughout history demonstrated that without God, thier best effort ends in judgement and destruction.  The founders of America knew this and sought wisdom from scripture in the founding of America.  Today, there is a warfare going on in the courts to remove the Ten commandments from our courtrooms.  How far will America remove God from their government?  The lesson on June 29, 2003 is a commentary on God and government.       Click here to listen now.
